Oversimplified: Volume 116
Product design mental models, a metric for interestingness, and tiny wins
Hey there š
Howās everyone doing? Apologies for the delay since the last issue. Things have been a bit crazy getting started at the new job and traveling around, trying to dodge natural disasters left and right. But here we are.
Iām going to try a little experiment this week. Less color commentary from me and more links. Iād love to hear from you if you have any strong preference towards one or the other.
āļø A Mental Model for Product Design
I came across an interesting blog post on the elements of product design and wrote up my quick summary and takeaways. Most of my thoughts are centered around a great visualization from the post.
š A Metric for Quantifying Interestingness
Loved this stats write-up from the always interesting David Robinson. Fun fact: Davidās blog was one of the things that first convinced me to start writing in public
š The Two-Jobby Problem
This feels like something that we will be talking more about in the coming years. All the big news publishers love taking the other side.
š Tiny Wins
Love this short post on the benefits of littleĀ changes. Though now Iām curious how product teams can make work like this a first-class citizen.
š The Seniority Rollercoaster
I havenāt experienced a lot of the stuff here personally yet, but Iāve wondered about down-leveling titles and this was really enlightening.
š The Specialization of Product Management
Another great post from Reforge. They observe that PMs are generally getting more focused in their roles, and I tend to agree.
š How I Experience the Web
This was an awesome idea that went somewhat viral over the past few weeks. Honestly, this is part of the reason I like email.
š A Web Framework for Data Analysts
This Hacker News thread on a recently launched analytics startup was endlessly fascinating to me. Iām still percolating on some of the ideas here.
Food for Thought
āYou get ideas when you ask yourself simple questions. The most important of the questions is just, āWhat if...?āā ā Neil Gaiman
Until next time
As always, if you're enjoying Oversimplified, I'd love it if you shared it with a friend or two. If anything stood out, whether good or bad, I would love to hear about it. Reply to this email orĀ tweet at meĀ and letās chat.
Until next time,
